Although excellent performers, the Merchant Navy Class had numerous mechanical issues, that necessitated a major rebuilding programme. In May 1959 Canadian Pacific returned to Eastleigh Works for its rebuild which involved reverting many of the more novel features to those of more standard practice. The most noticeable visual change was the removing of the 'Spam Can' casing. Canadian Pacific was among one of the later Merchant Navy class locomotives to be rebuilt to R.G.Jarvis' more conventional outline.
Canadian Pacific’s claim to fame came on the 15th May 1965 when it achieved 105mph down Winchester Bank crewed by Nine Elms Driver Gordon Hooper and Fireman Dave Wilson. Although this was not quite the fastest record set by a Merchant Navy Class (held by 35003 Royal Mail at 105.88mph,) it was noteworthy due to a 41 minute net time for the start to stop journey between Waterloo and Basingstoke.
The Beeching Report accelerated the move to diesel and electric-powered trains, leading to the removal of steam locomotives from British Railways. Canadian Pacific (35005) was withdrawn from service in 1965 from Weymouth Shed.
