Women’s Work KS3 Year 8-9

The railways employed women as early as the 1800's. Learn about the differing roles of women on the railways between 1800's-1960's. Explore gender issues, work/life expectations and the personal achievements of women.

Here at the Watercress Line we have a personal interest in the roles of women on the railways. Our flagship steam engine, Canadian Pacific was built during WWII when Eastleigh Locomotive and Carriage Works employed large proportions of women. Some of whom would have worked on this engine.

In groups create a poster about women's work on the railways. This can be offered as an outreach session or based at the railway.
