In conjunction with our already existing education activities, we are offering a number of ‘new’ educational activities.

Please contact outreach.mhr@hotmail.com to express your interest.

CREST Discovery Days 11-14 year olds

A day of challenges and problem solving on the Watercress Line. Based at our engineering hub at Ropley learn what it takes to run and maintain a heritage steam railway.

  • Take a tour of our engineering workshops and find out how we restore our steam engines.
  • Learn about signalling in our Ropley Signal Box from one of our Signalmen.
  • Have a go at designing and building a bridge that could be used on our railway.
  • Find out what it takes to drive and fire an engine from one of our engine crews on board a steam engine.

CREST Discovery Awards offer a great introduction to project work. Typically takes about five hours to complete (so can be done in one day!) and are ideal for classroom, club or youth group activity days.

Cost: £3 per student

Women’s Work KS3 Year 8-9

The railways employed women as early as the 1800's. Learn about the differing roles of women on the railways between 1800's-1960's. Explore gender issues, work/life expectations and the personal achievements of women.

Here at the Watercress Line we have a personal interest in the roles of women on the railways. Our flagship steam engine, Canadian Pacific was built during WWII when Eastleigh Locomotive and Carriage Works employed large proportions of women. Some of whom would have worked on this engine.

In groups create a poster about women's work on the railways. This can be offered as an outreach session or based at the railway.

Cost: FREE
